Development of the Britain’s Got Talent website – 2011

Talkback THAMES Digital (part of the FremantleMedia Group) recommissioned The Dubs for the development of their keynote entertainment brand ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ for the 4th year running.

With 31.5 million video views across the site during the TX period, our content publishing  platform is incredibly robust!

The Dubs are the only external vendor to Britain’s largest free to air broadcaster to operate its own proprietary CMS within ITV’s serving environment having been extensively audited against a variety of criteria including: ease of use for editing teams, flexibility in mapping CMS functions to production processes and broadcast format particulars, robustness & extensibility. Our platform has been conceived & optimised on-going for broadcast industry specific use.

“Working to extend some of biggest TV brands into the digital space means that we need to work with companies that can more than deliver our vision. The Dubs understands multiplatform content and consistently deliver above and beyond expectations. They understand how to work with broadcasters and how to communicate with programme makers and importantly they understand the commercial sensitivities shared across all”

Robert Marsh Head, talkback THAMES Digital (FremantleMedia)

5 Things…

1.  Do you what the world’s 2nd largest largest social platform is?

If you said ‘Yes, its QQ Instant messenger’ then you’re lying, well, unless you’re Chinese. My own informal survey (asked everyone in the office) showed that none of the 485 million QQ users work in the office here.

When I looked at
http://im.qq.com
it told me there was currently 118,235,823 online. Could be time to start brushing up your Chinese methinks.

In fact, it’s very interesting to see that regionally there are quite a few local social brands and networks that are doing quite well, Orkut in Brazil, VZnet Netzwerke in Germany and Tuenti in Spain for example.

2. 4D mapping

Advancing projector technology is enabling pretty spectacular outdoor promotional events these days.

Well, years ago when I was working at the NHK High Definition computer graphic research lab in Tokyo I heard rumors that the Japanese military (well, self defence force I guess) had a type of laser projector that could project moving images onto clouds!

The idea being thousands of co-ordinated lasers with each laser acting like 1 pixel in the image…

Bring it on!

Take a look at Hot Wheels Secret Race Battle – 3D projection mapping in Sydney and Praetorian Building

3. Social Mention

Social mention is a free tool that does a pretty good job of scouring the net and aggregating ‘social mentions’. You can search a keyword across blogs, microblogs, images, events, news, videos, audio and more. You can choose a category individually or search across all of them.

Social Mention includes a vast amount of statistics about the search in addition to actual search results. Thesestatistics include the sentiment (positive, negative or neutral), top keywords, top users, Postrank rankings, and sources.

Try it out.

4. Sound Cloud

Soundcloud is a great example of a social media platform that has been tailored for a specific audience. DJ’s and sound creators have really adopted Soundcloud as the way to get their music out there and collaborate, converse about all things music.

Here’s what the one of the co-founders Alex Ljung said in Wired magazine

We both came from backgrounds connected to music, and it was just really, really annoying for us to collaborate with people on music — I mean simple collaboration, just sending tracks to other people in a private setting getting some feedback from them, and having a conversation about that piece of music. In the same way that we’d be using Flickr for our photos, and Vimeo for our videos, we didn’t have that kind of platform for our music

5. Infographics

Take something as dry as statistics… mix in some animated line art and hey presto, I can watch them all day!

Here’s a couple of current favourites:

Mobile infographic – A short animated video presenting statistics and future predictions about mobile technology.

Social media infographic – An animated video about the rapid growth of social media and it’s impact on the world.

And finally, not an infographic per se but here’s Microsoft envisaging the future

5 Things…

1. Joi Ito named new MIT Media Lab Director.

Joichi Ito, well-known thinker, writer, venture capitalist and entrepreneur who has sat on the boards of Creative Commons, Mozilla, Technorati, ICANN, Twitter, Six Apart, and Flickr, has been named the new director of the MIT Media Lab.

Having personally seen Joi pioneer so many areas over the past 20 years, especially in the fields of social media, it will be very interesting to see how he brings his unique perspective to the cutting edge of academia. We expect to see the Media lab under Joi’s charge leading the way in unexpected directions.

2. World of Warcraft-Like Order & Chaos MMORPG rolls out in the App Store

Order & Chaos is a 3D MMO (Massively Multi-player Online) game drawing inspiration from the hugely popular World of Warcraft.

MMO games have in many ways been the most cutting edge online communities, with users’ actively interacting and utilizing communication and social tools as an integral part of the game experience. With the increased exposure of gaming mechanics to a wider audience via bringing these environments mobile, we expect the current ‘gamification’ of content and services will be a strong trend.

Download the app and try it out.

3. YouTube movies vs iTunes vs Netflix vs Hulu

YouTube will shortly be launching an on-demand movie service, which will charge people to stream movies from most of the Hollywood studios. The Google-owned site’s 130 million monthly users will be able to pay to watch movies as they come out into the DVD market; it is the first serious foray by the company into mainstream movies and charging money for video content.

The movies will be available on the same day and date as they can be rented at video stores or iTunes, far ahead of other subscription streaming services such as Netflix. It will be interesting to see if YouTube partners to offer premium TV programming in the future challenging Hulu’s territory.

4. Klout

Klout measures influence on topics from across different social media platforms. It allows you to track the impact of your links, recommendations, and options across a variety of social media platforms.

It collects data about the content you create, how people interact with that content, and the size and composition of your network. It then collects the data and breaks it down in an easy-to-analyse way.

Tools like this cater to one of the drivers of social media – status. The ability to monitor your social ‘influence’ is definitely a handy tool in keeping tabs on how your social footprint is doing.

5. Survey Says 21% of PS3 Owners Considering Moving to Xbox 360

With the recent security breach on the Sony/PSN, a survey in the U.S. has found that 21% were considering selling their PS3′s in favour of an Xbox 360. 89% were concerned that their personal data had been stolen in the breach and 65% said their trust in Sony/PSN had been “greatly affected”.

This Sony/PSN security breach highlights how strongly people feel about the security of their online identities and personal information and how important it is for companies and organisations that hold people’s personal data to have extremely robust protections in place. It is said that this event will cost Sony $US24 billion.
